CBN Segments – Brake Disc Machining

Segmented CBN grinding and honing stones for EURO 7-compliant friction ring machining of brake discs.

CBN-Segmente – Bremsscheibenbearbeitung

The EURO 7 standard places increased demands on particulate emissions from brake systems. Alongside material selection, the targeted surface finishing of the brake disc is becoming critically important. CBN segments enable a reproducible friction ring surface with a defined topography, low thermal damage, and stable process characteristics – central requirements for reducing brake wear over the entire service life.

Product program

  • Version: segmented CBN grinding and honing stones for friction ring machining
  • Bond: metallic (MH) or hybrid (MP), matched to tool life and surface function
  • Grit size: D181 – D54 for targeted control of functional roughness
  • Geometry: customer-specific segment dimensions matched to the tool holder
  • Process design: optimized for EURO 7-relevant surface parameters (Ra, Rz, Rpk)

Process and benefits

  • Defined surface – reduced brake wear, stable friction coefficient
  • Thermally safe process – no microstructural damage
  • Segmented machining – homogeneous friction ring surface
  • Reproducibility – consistent emissions performance
  • High tool life – stable quality across production runs

Application example

EHWA CBN ceramic bond (vitrified CBN) – fine grinding of laser-cladded brake discs (EURO 7 coatings, e.g. HVOF / laser cladding).

Process parameters, brake disc fine grinding
MaterialCoated brake disc (carbide coating)
OperationCylindrical / face fine grinding of the friction ring
Grinding wheelCBN, ceramic bond (EHWA Vitrified)
Cutting speed80 – 120 m/s
Infeed0.01 – 0.03 mm
Target roughnessRa ≤ 1.0 µm

Grinding wheel tool life increased by up to 25 %. Result at the customer: stable surface structure of the friction face, no coating spalling, no thermal cracks, uniform contact pattern on the brake disc.
