Honing Stones – Cylinder Block / Connecting Rod Machining
Metal-bonded honing stones for rough, finish, and plateau honing of cylinder bores and connecting rod bores.
Honing cylinder blocks and connecting rods is a precision finishing process for setting dimensional accuracy, form accuracy, and a defined surface structure. In the automotive, commercial vehicle, and e-mobility industries, reproducible bore geometries, load-bearing plateau surfaces, and process-stable tool life are essential for the function, service life, and cost-effectiveness of the assemblies.
EHWA honing stones are designed for series-production honing and cover roughing, finishing, and fine-finish/plateau honing.
Product program
Metal-bonded honing stones (CBN / diamond) for cylinder block and connecting rod.
- Roughing grit sizes: D251 – D91
- Finishing grit sizes: D76 – D30
- Fine-finish / plateau grit sizes: D25 – D8
- Bonds: MB, MS, MJ, MH (matched to the application)
- Dimensions: customer-specific, based on honing head, bore diameter, and stone height
- Design: matched to material (grey cast iron, CGI, steel, PM materials), cutting speed, and infeed strategy
Special versions: coated diamond grits (e.g. Double-S quality), optimized chip spaces for high removal rates, sulfur-free bond systems for simplified disposal.
Process and benefits
- Stable dressing behavior – consistent removal rate over the entire tool life
- Defined grain exposure – reproducible roughness and plateau values
- High thermal safety – minimized microstructural changes and dimensional deviation
- Long tool life – fewer tool changes and lower cost per component
- High process stability – reliable roundness, cylindricity, and straightness
- Sulfur-free bonds – simplified disposal, lower environmental and operating costs
Application example
MB, MS, MJ | EHWA metal bond – series honing of cylinder bores and connecting rod bores in the automotive industry.
| Workpiece | Cylinder block (grey cast iron / CGI), connecting rod (quenched-and-tempered steel) |
|---|---|
| Bore diameter | Cylinder block 75 – 90 mm, connecting rod 40 – 55 mm |
| Process | Roughing → finishing → fine-finish / plateau |
| Bond | metal-bonded, sulfur-free (MJ / MH, application-dependent) |
| Cutting speed | 20 – 35 m/min (process-dependent) |
Honing stone tool life increased by 80–120 % compared to the previous standard solution, with constant roughness and plateau values over the entire tool life. Figures from an approved customer process.
