CBN plunge grinding of gearbox components
Plunge grinding of gearbox components combines high requirements for dimensional accuracy, form accuracy, and surface quality. Typical functional surfaces are shaft shoulders, bearing and seal seats, and other diameters on hardened components.
The grinding wheel is only one part of the process. Tool geometry, bond, dressing condition, machine, and coolant supply must be matched to each other.
Vitrified-bonded CBN grinding wheels
For external cylindrical and plunge processes, EHWA offers vitrified-bonded CBN grinding wheels with the VEWN bond. The tool design is customer-specific, based on machine, material, infeed strategy, and material removal rate.
However, no specific dimensional, profile, or specification data for an application can be derived from a single product image. These must always be coordinated based on the actual process requirement.
The importance of bond and dressing
CBN is used for machining hardened steels. In vitrified-bonded tools, the bond structure and dressing condition influence the cutting behavior of the grinding wheel.
For the VEWN bond, EHWA describes a defined pore structure and a self-sharpening effect. In practice, this supports a targeted balance between chip space, coolant access, and process stability.
The dressing condition determines the effective grinding wheel surface. For profiled gearbox components, it is particularly relevant because the tool form must be reproducibly transferred to the component.
Heat and coolant supply
When grinding hardened components, the thermal load on the surface layer is an important factor. Whether a process runs stably depends, among other things, on contact length, infeed, dressing condition, machine rigidity, and coolant supply.
The coolant supply must reliably reach the contact area. It supports heat dissipation and the removal of the chips generated.
From drawing to process approval
Not only target dimensions and tolerances are relevant for the tool design. The material condition after heat treatment, component geometry, workholding concept, and subsequent measurement strategy should also be considered.
A reliable process approval then confirms whether the tool, machine, and inspection criteria together reproducibly meet the agreed requirements.
Conclusion
Vitrified-bonded CBN grinding wheels are a relevant tool group for plunge grinding hardened gearbox components. The decisive factor is the coordinated combination of tool profile, bond, dressing, coolant delivery, and process monitoring.
